MusicBrainz is a MetaBrainz project that aims to create a collaborative music database that is similar to the freedb project. You have some options though: If you don’t want to embed the cover art in the file tags but instead save it as separate file you can disable saving tags entirely.

MusicBrainz was founded in response to the restrictions placed on the Compact Disc Database (CDDB), a database for software applications to look up audio CD information on the Internet. As said before updating tags with metadata from MusicBrainz is kind of the core functionality, with cover art more being something thought of as additional to that. Using Picard There are four stages to using Picard to process your audio files: Retrieving album information from MusicBrainz This stage identifies the album on MusicBrainz that will provide the information used for tagging the files, and retrieves the metadata from the MusicBrainz database. MusicBrainz has expanded its goals to reach beyond a CD metadata (this is information about the performers, artists, songwriters, etc.) storehouse to become a structured online database for music. MusicBrainz captures information about artists, their recorded works, and the relationships between them.
Recorded works entries capture at a minimum the album title, track titles, and the length of each track. These entries are maintained by volunteer editors who follow community written style guidelines. MusicBrainz Picard is a free music tagger available for Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems. Recorded works can also store information about the release date and country, the CD ID, cover art, acoustic fingerprint, free-form annotation text and other metadata. As of March 2022, MusicBrainz contained information on roughly 1.9 million artists, 3 million releases, and 26.5 million recordings. Definitely not a thing I want in my library so I’ll leave folksonomy unticked. EDIT: I’ve made a test for an album using folksonomy. Lowering the value here will lead to more, but possibly less relevant, genres in your files.

When selecting the cover art image types, you can select the types to both include and exclude from the download list. Choose how popular the genre must be before it is written by Picard.
